The Neuroscience of Happiness in Your Pocket

Mobile App: Habit Tracker for young people with ADHD. Practise self-care with the most inclusive and personalised mental health app.
Growth is a habit-building app that helps users manage daily tasks, track their progress, and stay motivated to keep growing. As we know, ADHD is quite common, affecting about 5% of children and 2-4% of adults, though it often goes underdiagnosed and undertreated in the UK.
Young people with ADHD often face unique challenges stemming from difficulties with focus, organisation, time management, and emotional regulation. These struggles can affect their life, including academic performance, social relationships, and personal development.
Seeing daily or weekly progress motivates users and reinforces positive behaviour. Additionally, tracking accomplishments boosts self-esteem by providing tangible evidence of success. I designed customisable reminders and push notifications to set streaks or gamify users’ progress, adding an element of fun and boosting self-esteem.
“His professionalism, responsiveness, and dedication to delivering high-quality work have exceeded our expectations. We are incredibly grateful for Sarah's contributions and would highly recommend her to anyone in need of a talented and reliable designer.”
The bright and vibrant colour scheme sets the Growth app apart from competitors. By pairing contrasting colours like lime and lavender purple, I designed a playful mascot to guide and inspire users during onboarding. The app provides visual insights and daily activities to teach users about mood balance and neurotransmitters. Additionally, I created Light and Dark UI modes for iOS, enhancing the app's accessibility.
During this project, I had the valuable opportunity to delve into the significance of visual hierarchy and strategic information placement. Understanding how to effectively showcase brand identity through design elements and the seamless incorporation of components was an important takeaway.
One of the key takeaways from this project is that design is a way of communicating with and understanding users. Design is meaningful when it serves users’ wants and needs and it can be facilitated by listening to users. For example, the Light and dark UI modes are crucial for modern apps because they not only enhance usability and accessibility but reduce distraction, bring aesthetic appearance, support brand identity and align with system preferences.
